"I will remember the works of the Lord; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old. I will also meditate on all Your work, And talk of Your deeds." Psalms 77:11-12

Why do we celebrate holidays, or have days of remembrance? Well, I suppose the answer is obvious… to remember right? Yes, why would we need to do that? Well in my experience, and maybe yours too, humans are an especially forgetful bunch. All you have to do is watch how fired up and angry people are over some current event, and not two months later, they have all moved on to something else and don’t even really care about what they were mad at to begin with. It’s actually quite comical once you start to notice it happening and it certainly works to our politicians advantage. Next time you wonder how bad politicians keep getting re-elected, now you know.

Well, God knows we are forgetful sheep and that is why He instituted various Holy Days for the Jews to remember their covenant with God and also to remember the many things He had done for them. You see when we don’t think about God, we tend to forget about God, and thus ignore God. We begin to imagine we are doing this life without Him, and that we maybe don’t need Him. Of course that tune changes pretty fast once we are in a situation we can’t control. Hmmm, I wonder if that has anything to do with bad things happening to “seemingly” good people? I put seemingly in quotes because we are all disgusting sinners who deserve eternal separation from God, but I digress.

It is important to remember the works of God, how He has come through for His people time and time again because it keeps us rooted in Him. It helps us to stand in the face of adversity knowing that He has been faithful and therefore we know He will be faithful. It’s how we can calmly remind ourselves to be still and know that He is God. Or my favorite phrase in the Bible, to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord! Often God requires us to do the very un-human thing of letting go so God can take over. This requires a lot of faith, because we like and want and need to be in control. However, reflecting on the works of the Lord can help build that faith. It's not only important to reflect on how God worked in the past in the biblical narrative but how He has worked in your own life. Hold on to those memories, treasure them, and share them with others, that your faith and our faith may be strengthened even as we see the days grow darker.

I pray your faith would be increased as you look for and remember the many ways that God has lifted you up in your life, and the lives of others. And that in the darkest and hardest times with faith that can move mountains you will be able to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord!
