Hebrews 6:18

So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.

Recently I have been thinking about God’s promises found in Scripture and the confidence we have that He will fulfill them. Many promises relate to our salvation and future hope in Christ. Other promises relate to meeting all our needs and His presence with us through every step of this life, “I will never fail you.  I will never abandon you”  (Hebrews 13:5). Even with God’s promises, it is so easy to waiver back and forth between doubt and faith. One minute we realize the greatness of our God and His supernatural ability and then the next minute we see all the obstacles looming around us. Abraham was an example of faith for us to follow. When God promised to make him the father of a great nation, the Scriptures tell us he “never wavered in believing God’s promise”  (Romans 4:20 NLT). The word waver means "to divide." Abraham did not allow the obstacles and problems to divide his mind. He kept focused on believing God’s words even when its fulfillment was not humanly imaginable.

I notice in my life, when things are going well, it is much easier to trust God. When something seems impossible, I have to honestly admit that it is easier to distrust God, then to trust Him. When my mind is divided in this way, I find it helpful to think about what God cannot do. The Scriptures tell us it is “impossible for God to lie” and “…God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago”  (Titus 1:2 NASB). I take comfort in knowing that God can never go back on His word and he will fulfill all His promises us. When Joshua came to the end of his life he told the Nation of Israel, “Deep in your hearts you know that every promise of the LORD your God has come true. Not a single one has failed!”  (Joshua 23:14 NLT)

I am so glad that people in Scripture over and over again gave clear testimony that whatever God had promised He never failed to fulfill. That gives me confidence when I think about the future hope we have with God. I know He will fulfill every word He has spoken, just as He has through all generations. May it be said of us, as it was of Abraham, “In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises”  (Romans 4:21 NLT).

Is there anything that is dividing your mind today when it comes to God’s faithfulness to fulfill what He has promised to us? If so, ask God to help you work through the doubts in your mind. Continue to take steps that will grow your faith in Him and bring Him glory.

Prayer: Lord, life is so real and at times causes me to doubt your presence and ability to keep your promises. Help me Lord to see You in all your glory and majesty. Help me to trust you more each day even when your promises seem humanly impossible. Amen.
