"Welcome Home"
Ephesians 2:19–22 - “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.” (ESV)
Whoever said there’s a thin line between love and hate was on to something. Because while I’d never say that I hate any of my family members, some I have a hard time getting along with. Some of my family members are loud and boisterous. Some of them are stubborn and REALLY challenging. Some of them are awkward and a bit of a pain. Many come from different home lives and have different standards and expectations as a result. Now, your family may be great, or you may struggle to even be in the same room with them. Some have big families while others have really small families. No matter what, though, we all NEED family.
In today’s passage, Paul reminds his readers that we have been given the "right" to become children of God. So, no matter the amount of love we have for our families, Jesus offers us a place in the family of God. With that, we ought to take time thinking about what it means to be a part of God's family as His children. We are to remember, for example, that the church is not just the place where we gather, it is also the people. We are God's dwelling place. It's not just a building, but rather a body—His family. And it's in this community of believers that we also find a new home in Jesus.
When we truly understand this, we regularly seek opportunities to serve one another. We embrace the call to do right by each other without growing weary. We cherish the opportunities we have to gather with one another rather than isolate ourselves or keep our church family out of important areas of our lives. I pray that we’d ask God how we can do good for the people in our spiritual homes this upcoming week.
