1 Peter 5:6-7 – "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you." (ESV)

We live in anxious times. People are facing all kinds of challenges, trials, and uncertainties in their daily lives. With everything happening in the world around us, it’s not surprising that many people are fearful and anxious.

This passage contains one of the most well-known encouragements in the Bible: “Cast all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you.” But notice that this statement actually begins in the previous verse: “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God.”

In a sense, humility and anxiety cannot live in the same place. Anxiety often grows when we try to carry burdens we were never meant to carry. Humility, on the other hand, acknowledges that we need God and that we can trust Him with the things that weigh on our hearts.

Scripture reminds us again and again not to worry, not to be anxious, and not to be afraid. Jesus addresses this directly in the Sermon on the Mount:

“Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ … Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” (Matthew 6:31–34)

God calls us to trust Him because He cares deeply for us. Psalm 46 reminds us that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” When we face the difficulties of life in our own strength, we quickly realize how limited we are. But when we remember that God is with us in every circumstance, the storms of life do not seem quite so overwhelming.

Charles Spurgeon once used an illustration of a man hired to move furniture. Imagine the man arrives carrying a huge, heavy backpack of his own. As he works, he complains about how difficult the job is. Naturally, you would suggest that he set down his own burden so he could carry the furniture more easily.

In much the same way, we struggle to do what God calls us to do when we are weighed down by our own worries. God invites us to lay those burdens at His feet.

When we humble ourselves before Him and cast our anxieties on Him, we discover what Jesus promised—that His burden is light and His yoke fits us perfectly.

So, the invitation of this passage is simple: bring your worries to God. Lay them down before Him. Trust that He cares for you and will carry what you cannot.
