21 Days of Prayer for the Lost: Day 15

Leave the Results to God

1 Corinthians 3:6-7 – “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.” (ESV)

I had a friend named John many years ago, we used to hang out quite a bit. He knew I was a Christian, and I knew he wasn’t. He would often be around when I was talking to family members or friends about Bible verses or any topics about God.

One time I was talking to another friend Tim who was young in his faith about questions on grace, it was a great conversation. After my conversation with Tim, John began to ask me questions about grace. The conversation turned to how good would someone have to be to become a Christian. I told him we would never be good enough. It was all about God’s Grace. John wouldn’t commit.

Some time had passed, and I hadn’t seen John or Tim for a while. One day Tim and I were talking, and I brought up John and how I felt John was so close to becoming a Christian and to keep praying for him. To my surprise Tim told me that he had recently prayed with John to accept Jesus as his personal Savior!! Wow I was excited for John.

But I asked Tim how long he had been talking to John about Jesus. He said only that one time, and he felt the Holy Spirit lead him to ask John to accept Jesus, and he led him through the sinner’s prayer. They had only one conversation and John and I had had many conversations.

I have to admit I was little jealous, ok I was very jealous. I confessed my feelings to a mentor of mine and he gave me this verse, 1 Corinthians 3:6-7.

John’s salvation had nothing to do with me or Tim. It wasn’t a contest.  As the Holy Spirit convicted me, I realized my job was only to do my part. It wasn’t me who was doing the saving. I planted the seed, but it wasn’t my seed, it was God’s. I was just the worker doing my job and Tim was just doing his job. We did our parts, and the outcome was all Jesus. Jesus uses us for his purposes, because we will never be good enough to do Jesus’s job, we can only do ours…with His Grace.

Just keep planting and watering… you can do it!!

Things to pray for today:
  • Pray for that one person that you hope God will save.
  • Pray for God’s leading to open the conversation.
  • Pray that the Lord will prepare you for questions you will be asked.
  • Pray and be ready to plant or water or reap.
