Luke 1:49-50 - "For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.” (NKJV)

So often in our prayer time we focus on what we need or want, what we are struggling with or fearful of. They are often prayers that are ultimately cries for help in some way from God. Now there is nothing wrong with going to God for your needs, your problems, your hurts, and your struggles. In fact God wants us to bring those to Him, He wants us to lean on His power and strength and not our own and recognize our dependence on Him. However it is also healthy and right to remember to reflect on what He has already done for us, how He has blessed us, supported us, cared for us, and provided for us.

We serve a mighty God who is greater than all and as we think back on our life I’m sure we can think of many ways that God came through for us when we needed Him. By keeping the many ways God has been there for us at the front of our mind, it helps us to remember that God will be there for us in our present circumstances. God’s faithfulness to His people over time shows us a track record that God keeps His promises, protects and loves His people, and can overcome anything we can imagine.

Now it doesn’t mean God will always save us, protect us, or provide for us in the way we think He should or in the time frame we think is appropriate. But God’s track record allows us to understand that God’s ways are higher than our ways and we can depend on God to respond to our needs and trust Him for means and the timing.

In addition to us reflecting on the goodness of God, the verse above makes three interesting points; first, God is mighty, second God is holy, and finally God is merciful. Now we know that we are broken, sinful, and rebellious people. So how do we expect a mighty and holy God to come to our aid? We who are not holy, but rather sinful and corrupted. Thankfully God is also merciful to those who fear Him. This doesn’t mean that we are afraid of Him, that we hide and run away, but rather we have a reverence, an awe for Him in light of His power, His majesty, and His holiness. If we have a right view of God, that He is higher and greater than we can imagine, and therefore will subject ourselves to Him, He will have mercy on us and our generations! What an amazing promise from an amazing God.
