"What God Has Promised"

Jeremiah 32:16-17 - “After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord, saying: ‘Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you."  (ESV)

Let's be honest. We've all had days that feel impossible. Maybe little frustrations pile up until they’re too much, or some difficult news hits you hard. Friendships. Family. Bad news. Illness. Loss. Fights. Failures. There are so many reasons we could suddenly be facing a really horrible day. On those days, it can feel like the sun has gone dark, the world has gotten colder, and you're often left feeling alone. This may even leave you wondering, "Will it always feel like this?" At least that's how it felt for us when Alexis, my wife, was diagnosed with breast cancer at 29 years old. After a bilateral mastectomy, she had to endure four grueling months of chemotherapy. To make matters worse, shortly after her second round of treatment, her compromised immune system was put in even greater risk as the COVID-19 pandemic sent the world into a tailspin. These were not so great times.

The prophet Jeremiah knew what it was like to face overwhelming darkness. His country was being invaded, he was in prison, and everything felt hopeless. Yet, God told him to do something unexpected—buy a field in the middle of an invasion. God was promising Jeremiah that even when it seemed like everything was falling apart, good things would grow again. Jeremiah believed. He bought the land, saved the receipts, and trusted God's people would be restored. And eventually, they were. Jeremiah shows us that when the pain is real, the hurt feels overwhelming, and the darkness feels like it will never end—even still, God's promises are true.

Today, I want to encourage you to "look for the light" of God's promises (Joshua 1:9; Isaiah 41:10; Matthew 11:28-30; Philippians 4:19, etc.). They might be the promises you need right now or maybe someday soon. Just remember, no matter what you're facing, no matter how dark it seems, even still, God's promises are true and nothing is too hard for Him.
