Genesis 4:15 - "But the Lord said to him, 'Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.' Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him." (NIV)

This is so amazing. It really shows us both sides of the character of God. On one side,  He is just. Cain killed his brother out of jealousy because God accepted Abel’s sacrifice, the fat of the "firstborn" of his flock and rejected Cain's sacrifice of "some" of his fruit. He deserved to die as well. But another facet of God’s character is mercy. And although Cain deserved it, God protected him from the death he should have received. Just like He protects us from death by the shed blood of Jesus.

Everyone knows that someday they will actually die. Sometimes I sit and try to contemplate what that really means. It’s hard to think that someday I will not be on this earth. Someday I won’t be able to love on my kids and grandkids. Someday I will just not be here! It’s a little mind boggling to me and I have a really difficult time trying to see that. Selfishly I hope my inability to really understand the reality of that is because I will be alive, just not here. I mean I know that’s true, but as I was writing this, it was the first time I thought that my inability to envision it may be from God’s truth and not just my ack of faith. That I can’t really get it because death isn’t really going to happen to me because I will continue to live with God in eternity.

It's such a comforting thought, as I have always berated myself a little for not feeling at peace about the thought of dying. I’m sure I do have some lack of faith but it is actually really helpful to think it may partially be because it’s more than just dying, it’s just a walk into eternity.

But I’m digressing…or am I. Mercy is sooo incredible. It wipes out the debt of death, the punishment for what I deserve. Like Cain, I deserve true death. But God is merciful and provides protection for me from death…Through the blood of His sacrifice, Jesus.

Mercy
Verse 1
I will kneel in the dust
At the foot of the cross
Where mercy paid for me
Where the wrath I deserve
It is gone it has passed
Your blood has hidden me

Chorus 1
Mercy mercy as endless as the sea
I'll sing Your hallelujah
For all eternity

Verse 2
We will lift up the cup
And the bread we will break
Remembering Your love
We were fallen from grace

But You took all our shame
And nailed it to a cross

Chorus 2
May I never lose the wonder
O the wonder of Your mercy
May I sing Your hallelujah
Hallelujah Amen
(REPEAT)
Ending
I will kneel in the dust
At the foot of the cross Where mercy paid for me
