Habakkuk 2:20 - "The LORD is in his holy temple;
Let all the earth be silent before Him." (NIV)

I can remember when my husband Gary would be on mission trips to Africa for several weeks. For the first third of the time I was able to get a lot of projects done. I would catch up on a good book I was reading, enjoy time with friends, and just enjoy the fruits of my labor during the next third. But by the last third, I was ready for him to come home. Although it never was completely quiet, it was a bit too quiet for me, a bit too lonely.

When I read this verse I tried to sit really still and turn off any sounds around me. But there was still the hum of the refrigerator, the creaking of the house, and the outside noises creeping in. I couldn't drown out all the sound. I thought about what it would be like for the whole earth to be completely silent and realized only God has that kind of power and that kind of control. And I wondered, would it be kind of like how I felt the last part of the time that Gary was gone? But, the more I thought, I couldn't imagine it could be a lonely feeling. It will be all fulfilling because the Lord will be there! When we have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of us we are never apart from the LORD! I think the silence will be AWE in its essence.

Here are some other verses to ponder as you seek to be silent before the Lord:
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 - "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's."

Psalm 46:10 - "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!"
