Advent Devotionals: Day 12

God's Greatness Exemplified

Psalm 145:3

"Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom."

“Great” is a term we throw around a lot and apply to many different things. Maybe during this Advent season you'll see some dazzling Christmas lights, partake of a delicious holiday meal, or experience a number of other things we would call "great". However as we look at Psalm 145, we see that David is seeking to show us all the weight in the term "great" and to point us to greatness in its truest definition. He wanted us to see greatness exemplified in the glory and majesty of our God! In this Psalm, he laid forth God's greatness displayed in who He is and what He has done. Here we see that God is gracious, merciful, faithful, and righteous in all His ways; He is full of might and splendor! We also see a description of how His unsearchable greatness has touched us. He upholds those who are falling and He preserves us and provides for our every need. Our kind and gracious Creator has decided to show us love and mercy instead of the judgment we deserve. As we see God's greatness put forth again and again we also see what our response should be: to declare His greatness to the next generation and to tell all others about who God is and what He has done for us!

During this Advent season, do not let the lesser things steal away from the true greatness that should be attributed to our God. Read all of Psalm 145 and let it motivate you to stop for a moment and "meditate" on His glorious splendor and wondrous works! Hopefully we will be able to see more clearly what truly makes this season great: celebrating our great God coming to earth to bring His great salvation to mankind!

Prayer: God, help us to be truly amazed at Your greatness today. Thank You for not leaving us to ourselves but revealing Yourself to us and showing us who You are and what You've done. Please God continue to work in our lives in such a way that we cannot help but share about Your greatness with others.
