God Will Finish What He Started

"So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days. And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God."
Nehemiah 6:15-16

Are you the type of person who must finish what you start? I'm not. In fact, I'm really bad at finishing certain things. I've been known to start books and never finish them. Start projects and never finish them. Start a game of monopoly and never finish it, but let's be honest who ever finishes a game of monopoly. I even recently, got really into a TV show, got all the way up to the final season and stopped watching about two episodes in. Now in our faith journey, when we're dealing with adversity, we often get discouraged when it seems like God isn't present or visible. We may even go as far as to think that, like us, God might have forgotten us or moved on to the next thing. However, God is perfect and is faithful to finish what He started in us.

There are times when we don't feel like we can sense God at work in our lives, but Scripture reminds us of God's faithfulness to finish what He started in us. Philippians 1:6 tells us that He who began a good work in us will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Our trust and confidence must remain in God finishing what he started. In the passage in Nehemiah, we see how God used Nehemiah to restore the defenses of the city. Similarly, the walls and protection of our lives can be rebuilt, and as a result of the Lord's work in our lives, the people in our lives who are against us will be put to shame.

Truth is, the rebuilding process is a long one. God is teaching us slowly how to walk with Him, depend on Him, focus on Him, and as we grow with Him, He rebuilds our brokenness. Because the journey is long, we need good endurance to complete it. And 2 Timothy 2:12 gives us hope that there is a great reward for our endurance. Don't get tired of doing what is right. Don't give up hope. Doing the right things is difficult, but God will rebuild and reward us for our faithfulness.
