Daily Devotional

"You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16

Do you remember the children’s song “This Little Light of Mine”? A very simple song about letting the light of Christ that is within us as Christians shine for the world to see and not to hide it. You see we are God’s representatives here on earth, His ambassadors. For those who do not yet know God, we are the closest manifestation they can see, as we do good and love people. If we do not love and do good, why would they think our God, who we represent, would be any different.

Have you ever noticed that kids seem to pick up things from their parents that the parents often think they are doing a really good job of hiding from their kids? Well the world is the same way with us as Christians. We can often think we are doing a great job representing Christ, we go to Church, we attend a Bible study, we volunteer, and the list goes on. But the world sees how you were rude to the restaurant staff, how you belittled your co-worker, how you bragged about cheating on your taxes, and how you road rage when driving in traffic. The world looks at us Christians and thinks “they must not really believe in their own God.”

They say that character is doing what is right when no one is looking. But I think as Christians we need to amend that slightly. Christianity means living out our faith, especially when we think no one is looking, because we would be stunned at what people really do see. And that is our witness for Christ! Should it look vain and hypocritical? Let us therefore strive to do good that our deeds and actions would reflect the love of God so that He in turn will be glorified. Afterall how can we be expected to win people for Christ if they wouldn’t want to be like us in the first place? So go out and live your faith like you really truly believe it, especially when you think no one is looking, because they probably are, you just don’t know it!
