Who the Son Sets Free Is Free Indeed

"They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." John 8:33-36 (ESV)

Have you ever felt powerless? Some people feel this way if they owe an insurmountable debt or experience a difficult addiction they can't seem to get free from. This type of feeling can leave individuals feeling defeated and even "owned" by someone or something else. We know that we are guaranteed freedom in Christ. The truth is we don't always "feel" free.

Now we may not necessarily feel like we're enslaved, but as long we live a life of sin, we are a slave to sin. The reality is until Jesus frees us, we're all enslaved to sin. It is our master until we surrender to Jesus. We can try our best to avoid sin, but it will rule and dominate us without a relationship with Jesus. Our only hope is to allow Jesus to break the chains of sin in our hearts and lives. The promise of Jesus is that when He sets you free - you are completely free.

We not only have access to God through Jesus’s atonement for our sins, but we can also approach Him with boldness and confidence. The enemy would love to discourage us when we make a mistake and sin, but stay confident — nothing can take away your freedom because of what Jesus did on the cross for you.
