"I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law." Galatians 5:16-18

Salvation and sanctification, two big theological words, but what do they mean for us? Well Salvation is the act of God through Christ on the cross to save us from the punishment for our sins. We all deserve Hell, even the nicest of us are rotten sinners to the core that have fallen short of God’s standard and therefore are worthy of eternal separation from God. However Christ died in our place offering us salvation from our sins. Salvation is a one time act, sanctification on the other hand is a process, the process of becoming more like Christ after salvation.

Once we accept Christ we are given the Holy Spirit which will help to guide us to be more Christlike in our everyday lives. But here on this earth the corrupt sinful flesh is still very much a part of us and thus a conflict ensues. Everyday we are faced with the choice to walk in the Spirit or walk in the flesh. Galatians tells us that if we walk in the Spirit we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. Great! So how do we do that?

Well to walk in the Spirit is to follow after Christ and to do that we need to be in His Word. Keeping our eyes fixed on Christ by reading and studying our Bible is a great way to keep our mind stayed on Him and to know how we ought to live our daily lives. Furthermore we should be in prayer daily, again keeping our focus on Jesus through prayer and petition will help to keep the flesh at bay. If we determine to be like Christ, reading and studying His Word and praying daily it is like training as an athlete, training our body and mind to be like Christ and rejecting the flesh. But it is a daily process, each day we must decide to follow after Christ, to take up our cross, die to self, and desire to serve Him.
