"Love in Action"

“And we have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” 1 John 4:16

Words! Words! So many words, but not the right words! I am standing in front of the card section in my local store, I am frustrated!  There are no cards that adequately express my deep love for my husband on Valentine’s Day. Then I think about how I seek to show my husband every day I love him, by how I serve him!  While I complete my selection, I reflect on how
God has taught me that love is an action…even more than the card, and gift.  Love is revealed through sacrifice on a daily basis: taking the car to have the oil changed, cooking meals, taking out the trash.  Saying the words “I forgive you,” to right a wrong, or “I love you”.  Yes, it is important to say words, but action reveals the depth of those words. The card and gift I give my husband is just a small token of the love I give to him every day through my actions.

I am inspired when I read in the Bible the many ways God acted to reveal His great love for His children.  To name a few: saving Noah and his family; employing a big fish to swallow Jonah and then spit him up to correct Jonah’s attitude; parting of the Red Sea for His children to escape the Egyptians.   It goes on and on.  There are so many examples in the Bible of God taking action in love, to save, protect and guide his children.  God’s love and commitment went even beyond our understanding in sending His only son to die on the cross to save us from sin and unite us together with Him forever.  Love in action.

When you doubt God’s love for you, read about the many, many evidences of His love for His children in the Bible.  Pray that you will see how God is actively revealing the depth of His great love for you every day through action!  Every day God intervenes in your life to protect you, save you, guide you…. love you!

FOR PARENTS:
  • Write out the verse I John 4:16 and post it where it will be viewed often.
  • Help your kids understand the verse and memorize it.
  • Have a discussion with your kids about how we can show love through actions.
  • Make a list of all the things you do for them that prove you love them.
  • Make a list of all the things your kids can do that will be “love in action.”
  • Make a list of all the things God has done for your kids to prove His love for them.
  • Help your kids make a Valentine card for God.  Post it on your fridge.
