Advent Devotional

1 Thessalonians 5:5-11

"For you are all sons of light and sons of day.  We are not of night nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him.  Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing."

Who among us doesn’t appreciate a flashlight when we are confronted by the night? Jesus Christ did not just come to the earth as the Holy Baby in a manger.  He was born to die as our Savior so that you and I might live as children of light, holding the light of Christ against the darkness.  We do so well protected with the armor of faith, hope, and love.  We just need to stay vigilant.  However, we also know that we are not alone in this battle.  We have Christ, the Light of the World, to equip us.  We also have each other, our fellow children of light, to encourage us to stay vigilant against our daily war with the flesh, the devil, and the world’s evil values.

For Reflection & Discussion: What are some ways you are letting your light shine before men so they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for making it possible for us to stand against the darkness around us.  We praise You for giving us everything we need to do battle against those things that are contrary to Your design for us.  We choose to stay alert and to not let our guard down. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
