Daily Devotional: Security

Hebrews 13:8

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Change is something that is completely normal. Every 12 month period that we call a year has some amount of change in it. We’re only 7 months into 2020 and we’ve seen tremendous change on a daily, sometimes hourly basis. Some like change and some wish it never happened, but everyone is at least aware that it is inevitable; it’s part of the human experience.

When my wife Megan and I were dating, she attended school in Germany, and we were apart for 6 months at a time over a 2-year period. This was before Zoom, Facetime, or Skype. We could talk on the phone, but we literally didn’t see each other at all until we got to visit each other in person. Whenever we did have the chance to visit, we were both always surprised with how much each of us changed over the 6-month absence. Even subtle changes were very noticeable, and it always took us a little time to get to know each other again.

Not only do people change, but even places change. We just recently returned from a trip to our old hometown visiting family. Even though it had only been 9 months since we moved, even in that period of time things had changed. Some businesses and restaurants had closed, others had opened. Stop lights were updated, houses painted different colors, trees missing along the road. Though it was comforting to be back in a familiar place, things had changed.

The truth is, everything changes over time and this can sometimes be an unsettling thing. Everything in our life may change, but not Jesus. This is something that’s hard for us to wrap our minds around because change is so ingrained in our reality, but Jesus does not change. Because He is the same yesterday, today, and forever we can find such a source of comfort and security in Him.

Everything in your life could change overnight, but Jesus would still be the same. His love for you would be the same, His dependability would be the same, His presence with you and before you would the same. Yes, change is inevitable, but we never face it alone. We go forward each day with one who is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
