Nahum 1:3a

The Lord is slow to anger and great in power…

This verse is great news! When it comes to power, there’s no one who even comes close to the power of God Almighty. Not only is He powerful, but He is also slow to anger. To get an idea of how great this is, imagine if the opposite were true; imagine if God were quick to anger. What a terrifying reality that would be! Imagine if at the slightest mistake, God’s great power was unleashed in anger towards us. Thankfully, this is not the case. Though we all fall short of God’s standard of perfection, He is patient with us. His slowness to anger is not by any means a sign of weakness, but another example of His great love.

Not only does this verse remind us of God’s goodness, it can also serve as a reminder that we too can be slow to anger towards each other. This is certainly not easy, but just as God has shown patience with us, we can show patience with each other. It is not in our own strength that we accomplish this, but through His great power. We can each lean into God’s great power, experience the peace and comfort of His great patience, and likewise treat each other with the great love that He so lavishly gives to us.
