"I am He"

I drove away from home, to get out and get some perspective. When I need spiritual clarity, it often starts for me by getting away. Away from the house. Away from the city. When I see the mountains and the clouds, all the shadows, the breeze blowing, my spirit is lifted.

I took several turns, letting the Lord guide me lazily. I went north, which is common for me. It is the quickest way out of the world of men, to the expanse of God. I finally headed up Auberry Road, but circled back and found myself at a familiar lookout over Millerton Lake, on Sky Harbor Drive.

The sun shone off the lake, and the view was grand. Quiet prevailed mostly, apart from the shifting of gentle breeze. The water glistened, while the clouds looked down from afar.  The sun blessed the scene with its bright rays. I see the Table Mountains in the distance.

I am reminded of last night’s memory verses, *Isaiah 41:4. “Who has performed and accomplished summoning the generations from the beginning? ‘I, the Lord, am the first, and with the last. I am He.’” I am He. I wonder, how many generations have passed, moving across this very spot? It was long before Millerton Lake existed. But this spot existed. I can see for miles. Still, it is the tiniest glimpse of the world. And an even smaller speck in the fullness of the cosmos of creation.

Why is it all here? Earlier Isaiah poses four questions, then gives a clear and concise answer. “Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain
and spreads them out like a tent to live in. It is He who reduces rulers to nothing, who makes the judges of the earth meaningless.” *Isaiah 40:21-23

The most blessed of places to be is in the lap of the Creator, gazing together at His creation, resting in the eternal expanse of His purposes. A perfect confidence. Fearlessness pervades.  Peace and blessedness about the future prevail, as is declared about the Proverbs 31 woman – she laughs at the time to come, smiles at the future (Proverbs 31:25).

There is a kind of eternal calm here. How many more generations? Who knows? How many more earthly birth pangs. Who cares? Nobody. Not here. It is already written. Let the unfolding occur. Let my life be played out. Let the Lord be glorified.

Who did you say you were sitting with, Greg? It is He, who sits above the circle of the earth. Who are you, they might say to Him? He answers, “I, the Lord, am the first, and with the last. I am He.”
