My Story

On the way to visit family in Santa Cruz, I asked my husband, Jim to stop at the small Baptist Church where I accepted Christ many years ago.  We park and are greeted by the Pastor who agrees to let me into the sanctuary for a private time of reflection.  I remember exactly where I was seated that glorious day!  It’s disappointing to see that chairs have replaced the old pews.  Oh well…. I sit down in the chair where I sat the day I accepted Christ.  I am transported back to those moments when I was eighteen years old and remember….

My mind is in turmoil as I grip the top of the pew in front of me. A shaft of light beautifully shines through the window.  I know why I am here in this small Baptist Church.  Three months ago, I cried out to God, “If You are real show me!”  Shortly after my prayer, a neighbor invited me to go to church with her.  I had never been to church before…but I was desperate to know if God was real.  After three months of attending church, I finally get it. God is real! I now understand the free gift of eternal salvation prepared for me through the sacrifice of Jesus, God’s only son.  Without my acceptance of this wonderful gift, I am trapped in my sin forever! The Church congregation is singing “On Christ the solid Rock I stand; all other ground is sinking sand.”  I am afraid and my palms are sweaty as I consider what I am about to do.  My spirit feels the drawing call to decision.  YES, I am done with standing on sinking sand!  My heart cries out to God to take me as His own.  Stepping out of the pew into the isle, I walk forward to the front of the Church to declare to the Pastor I have accepted Christ!

My time of remembrance is over. With a full heart, I get up and step outside to join my husband as he is talking to the Pastor. The Pastor said that since they installed the chairs, they were selling the old pews. They had three left.  Yes, my dear hubby, Jim bought one of the pews from the Church!  We brought it home and Jim had a plaque put on it with my name and the date of my conversion!   What a wonderful gift! The next time our grandkids came over, they sat in the pew and listened as I told “My Story”.

Deuteronomy 4:9 “Only be careful and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.”

PARENTS:
  1. Tell your kids “Your Story”.  Tell it again, and again, so they never forget how you accepted Christ.
  2. Share with your kids some special memories of how God helped your through challenges and trials.
  3. Speak often of God’s work in your life.
