John 14:12 - "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father." (NKJV)
You know, sometimes we read passages and say we believe them but…I think especially in our western world, we gloss over certain phrases. Do we really believe this verse? I mean if we look at the works that Jesus did, do we really believe He will do the same kinds of things through us. This verse caught me in my tracks. I had to stop and ponder it for a while. I do believe in Him and I do believe He did all the works the Word records that He did; but does my belief translate into believing He will do those works and greater works through me? But thats why He died on the cross. Do I understand the magnificence of this? It’s really a little more than my brain can comprehend. I have to cry, “I believe, Jesus help my unbelief.” (Mark 9:24) I believe what Jesus did, but I want my belief to translate into truly believing that I can do greater things than He did. Oh me of little faith!
So I cry out my deepest desire to Him… and then stop. His works had to do with the needs of others and to glorify the Father. He met physical needs in order to point others to Jesus. As I pray for what may constitute as a miracle is it about my own discomfort, or my own desire, or is it about transforming a life?
Jesus knows we are messy, broken people. But He doesn’t stop conforming us; fine tuning our motivation to be in line with His plan. I am praying that my faith in Him and what He says will translate into others choosing to follow Him, and that those transformations will bring Him glory. I want His Resurrection to bring about "greater works."
