“Taming Our Anxious Thoughts”

"By day the Lord directs his love,
at night his song is with me—
a prayer to the God of my life."
Psalm 42:8

Consider the Lord’s thoughts of love toward each of us today. A love that values us with the very life of God’s Son that was given for us. A love that unconditionally accepts us as a result of this sacrifice. A love from which we can never be separated because of God’s Son making it possible for us to be a part of His family. As we meditate on God’s great love for us, He puts a song in our hearts during the dark times of our life. This enables us to focus on God’s thoughts toward us resulting in prayers of gratitude and worship.

The Scriptures encourage us to take every thought captive. In our frantic moments our thoughts spin out of control. Our minds find it difficult to shut down and we tend to fixate on certain thoughts that may or may not be true. Often in these dark times, it is difficult to see God’s love and care. His love for us has never changed and never will.

When God saved us, He gave us a renewed mind that is capable of thinking on biblical truth.  We find in Romans 12:2 that a renewed mind that is focused on spiritual truth will transform us.  When we struggle with negative and unbiblical recurring thoughts, prepare your mind for those times.  Thinking on scriptural truth will enable your mind to rest when tempted to fixate on error. Today, meditate on God’s love and challenge any thoughts that in any way would minimize His love for or His acceptance of you.

  1. What frantic thoughts typically swirl in your mind? If you have trouble sleeping, what thoughts fixate in your mind?
  2. How can you bring God into those thoughts?
  3. What steps can you take to quiet your mind and to focus on spiritual truth? 2 Corinthians 10:4-5
  4. What aspects of God’s love would help you deal with thoughts of rejection, conditional love or failure?

Take a moment to pray, “Lord Jesus, I give you all my anxious, frantic thoughts. I want You to be the center of my life and my thoughts. I need You to quiet my mind. Help me to focus on You and free my mind to dwell on truth.” Amen
