Advent Devotional

John 3:31-36

“He who comes from above is above all, he who is of the earth is from the earth and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all. What He has seen and heard, of that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony. He who has received His testimony has set his seal to this, that God is true. For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand. He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

Christmas Day is not just about family gatherings and exchanging gifts. It isn’t just about the Baby Jesus, meek and mild. It is about the Holy Son of God who existed for eternity in an intimate relationship with the Holy Heavenly Father and the Holy Spirit. Before the world began it was the Father’s plan to send the Son to pay the penalty for our sin and to show us that trusting in Christ alone for our salvation is the only way to Heaven (John 14:6). It also makes Father, Son and Holy Spirit sad that those who do not follow Christ will also be separated from the Heavenly Father and the Holy Spirit for eternity. Why, therefore, wouldn’t we flock to Jesus today of all days — to run to Him, not just as the Savior of the World but our Savior? What is Christmas without Christ?

For Reflection & Discussion: Looking back on the past month, how have these devotionals ministered to you and impacted your life?

Prayer: Holy God, thank you for sending Your Son to pay the penalty for our sin and to show us the only way to heaven. We acknowledge our sin and accept your free gift of salvation. We also pray for those who have not yet trusted in Christ for their salvation. Open their hearts so that they will flock to Jesus today. Amen.
