"Magnum Opus"
Magnum opus is Latin for what is viewed as the most important work of a person. It is the opposite of what some might see as a failure, a clunker, a debacle…even a bomb! After 72 years of life I have quite a list of failures.
- I bombed at being a singer. My junior high dream.
- I failed at breaking the 2-minute half-mile. My high school aspiration.
- I have yet to finish writing that extensive commentary on the Book of Proverbs. My present goal.
So, what then is my magnum opus…my most important work? The simple answer: I don’t know.
- Is it almost 50 years of marriage?
- Is it 44 years of raising children/foster-children and now 15 grandchildren?
- Is it almost five decades of pastoral ministry in 35 countries?
- Is it these “later years” when I get to mentor so many ministers, missionaries, and “men in action”?
I rather think my best accomplishment has yet to be revealed. I pray it will be at my death when I hope I will hear from My Savior: “Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’” (Matthew 25:23)
Dei gratia…by the grace of God!
