DAY 28: I Get to be the One

As I sit here writing this devotion, I hear my daughter singing and playing out in the backyard.  I can’t imagine a world without the sound of her voice, without the chance to give her a hug and be her daddy.

It reminds me of the beautiful song by JJ Heller called “I Get To Be The One.”  Here are a few of the lyrics, written to her unborn child:

How does someone so small
Hold my heart so tightly
I don't even know you
I love you completely
I get to be the one to hold your hand
I get to be the one

My heart breaks for the millions of parents who will never get to hold their child’s hand or hear their sweet voice singing in the backyard.

But I’m also reminded of the incomparable privilege and immeasurable blessing of being a father.

For the past few weeks we’ve been praying for other people’s children.  Let’s make sure we don’t overlook our own!

Suggested things to pray for:
  • Today let’s pray for own kids – that they would grow up to know and love and serve the Lord with all their might.
  • Pray that we might be the best parents we can be – wise, generous, supportive, caring, patient, and appreciative of every moment we have with our families.
