DAY 4: The Miracle of Life

Did you know a few years ago scientists at Northwestern University discovered a spark of life that takes place at the moment of conception?  The researchers filmed a bright flash of light at the exact moment a sperm makes contact with an egg.  One headline read: “Bright flash of light marks incredible moment life begins.”

In the past 50 years, science has confirmed what the Bible taught all along – life begins at the moment of conception!

In Psalm 139, David wrote: “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” (Verses 13-16)

In this passage, David credits God with creating three things:
  • “unformed substance” =  embryo
  • “frame” = skeleton
  • “inward parts” = internal organs

So David knew all along what science is just now discovering through technology… that the formation of a human being inside the womb is a miraculous process superintended by the hand of Almighty God.

At the moment of conception, a new human being comes into existence with its own unique genetic composition.  A single strand of DNA contains enough information to fill 384 volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica, and that one strand contains the assembly instructions for engineering and constructing the marvelous complexity of the human body.

By 12 Weeks, this is what a precious little pre-born baby looks like:
  • I am about 2 inches long
  • I could fit in the palm of your hand
  • My heart is beating
  • I have brain waves
  • All my body systems are present
  • I have fingerprints
  • I can squint, swallow, retract my tongue, and make a fist
  • I can feel pain

Suggested things to pray for:
  • Praise God for the marvelous, miraculous blessing of children (Ps 127:3-4).
  • Pray that God would open people’s minds and hearts to realize that life begins at conception.
