"My heart is confident in you, O God; my heart is confident. No wonder I can sing your praises!" Psalm 57:7 (NLT)

Like many other Psalms, this Psalm was written by David. When you look at David’s life it’s no wonder that he was so confident in God. He took out lions and bears as a kid, defeated a giant when all the soldiers of Israel were too afraid, and was literally hand-picked by God to be king over His people. It’s probably after some amazing victory that he wrote this Psalm…actually no, quite the opposite.

Under the heading to Psalm 57 it says, “A Psalm of David, regarding the time he fled from Saul and went into the cave.” Yeah, that doesn’t really sound like a victorious time that it would be easy to be full of confidence. In fact, right before verse 7 there’s prequel verse that says, “My enemies have set a trap for me. I am weary from distress, they have dug a deep pit in my path…”

It’s AFTER this verse that David says in verse 7, “My heart is confident in you, O God…” and there’s the key; He’s confident IN God. There’s lots of things we can place our confidence in; job security, relationships, bank accounts, and 401ks, but the problem is all of them will disappoint us at one time or another. I’d be lying if I said I was never disappointed in God or by something He was doing. In reality, it wasn’t God who let me down, rather it was my incorrect view and vision of what I thought He should do. If our confidence is placed solely in God and not the circumstances around us it will change things. No, it might not physically change your circumstances (it’d be great if it did though!) but it will change your focus. It’ll allow you to see past the negative circumstances, past the disappointment, past the letdown to a God who is there and always worthy of praise.

I was recently listening to a song by one of my favorite bands, Rend Collective. The song is called “I Choose to Worship.” It’s a great song, and one part in particular always hits home, “I will praise you through the fire, through the storm, and through the flood, there is nothing that could ever steal my song. In the valley, You are worthy, You are good when life is not. You will always and forever be my song.”

I love that song when life feels great and love it even more when it doesn’t. Like David, we can praise God at all times because He’s always good! What an amazing thing to be able to focus on and what an attribute that is always worthy of praise!
