Advent Devotional

Acts 20:35

“Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

In this mixed-up world, we equate material possessions with happiness.  But often those who have the most end up being the least happy.  According to Jesus, when we keep things for ourselves, we don’t just prevent others from receiving a blessing, we rob ourselves of a blessing too!

Here are 10 reasons why it’s more blessed to give than to receive:

  • God is a generous giver!  When we give, we become more like him.
  • Giving frees us from our attachments and addictions to material things.
  • Giving produces a deep sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in our souls.
  • Giving makes us feel closer to other people.
  • Giving is a visible, tangible manifestation of God’s sacrificial love.
  • Giving demonstrates trust that God is able to supply all of our needs.
  • Giving is an act of obedience.
  • Giving makes us more aware of the needs around us.
  • Giving makes us more thankful the things we have.
  • Jealousy, envy, greed, and covetousness make people miserable.  But giving makes people happier.

For Reflection & Discussion: Instead of focusing on receiving this Christmas, how could you focus on giving?

Prayer: Father, open our eyes to see all the ways you provide for us every day. Flood our hearts with gratitude for your kindness and generosity. We recognize that every good and perfect gift we have comes from you.  Help us to be cheerful givers.  And help us to be more like you.
