Advent Devotional

Isaiah 6:1-3

"In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple.  Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.  And one called out to another and said: “Holy, Holy, Holy is the LORD of Hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!”

The Advent season celebrates the reality that this glorious, heavenly King has rend the heavens and come down in Jesus Christ.  John made it clear that it was Jesus whom Isaiah saw sitting upon that throne (John 12:41).  And it was John who later saw a similar scene in which the angels were crying out “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” (Rev. 4:8).

During this Advent, rejoice that our King has been victorious!  The Immortal One took on our mortality and suffered its sting.  Our precious King has slain sin and death for His beloved subjects that they may enjoy eternal life with Him.  He is active in our midst this very day as the King who intercedes for us (Rom. 8:34)!  He is the King soon to return (Rev. 22:7, 12, 21)!  Oh, how we long for His Second Coming!

For Reflection & Discussion: If you saw the Lord sitting on his throne, high and lifted up, like Uzziah, how do you think you would have reacted?

Prayer: Father of Lights, the one good and perfect Gift has come down from You, bringing all other good and perfect gifts.  In Christ, we have received every spiritual blessing and we await the day that our faith becomes sight . . . the same day that the spiritual blessings become physical realities.  Though we do not see Your Son yet, we love Him and we are filled with inexpressible and glorious joy.  Amen.
