Advent Devotional

Isaiah 2:1-4

"The word which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.  Now it will come about that in the last days. The mountain of the house of the LORD will be established as the chief of the mountains, and will be raised above the hills; and all the nations will stream to it. And many peoples will come and say, Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that He may teach us concerning His ways and that we may walk in His paths.” For the law will go forth from Zion and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And He will judge between the nations, and will render decisions for many peoples; and they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, and never again will they learn war."

Isaiah prophesied about a day in the future when Jesus Christ the Messiah comes and establishes His kingdom. This will be a time of peace and holiness when the nations flock to the mountain of the LORD and are taught his ways and walk according to his word.

Prophecies like this one provide us not only with satisfaction for our curiosity regarding the future but primarily to give us consolation through the knowledge of the future. This knowledge gives believers a future and a hope and motivates us to live a godly, holy life in this present evil age. As we celebrate this advent season and remember that Christ came to save us from our sins, let us also look toward the future when Christ will come again. For what you are looking for will greatly influence what you are living for.

For Reflection & Discussion: What are you looking for this Advent season?  What are you living for?

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for sending your Son into the world so save us from our sins. And thank you for the promise of a future and a hope with you forever. Keep our eyes fixed on You that we may live a godly and holy life.  Amen.
