"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

This is one of those verses that brings back my AWANA memories. It’s one of those memory verses that always stuck with me, and it is a good one. There is a lot of good meat in this verse and let's face it, we all need wisdom.

The first part is trust in the Lord. What does that mean, what does it mean to really trust in someone? Being trustworthy means you can rely on someone, that they are honest and truthful. We can trust God, we can rely on Him, for everything. The second part of that is with all your heart. You don’t just trust Him a little bit, or in some things or partially, with all your heart! You are jumping in with both feet, you are all in. It kind of reminds me of a trust fall, where you would fall backwards and “trust” that someone will catch you. You are not trusting anything else at that point but the person catching you, you are completely trusting in them, that is how we are to trust God.

We are called to not lean on our own understanding. We have such a small view of the larger picture we are always dealing with incomplete information, in all things. But God knows everything, His understanding is the highest and always what we should be seeking. And we can trust Him!

The second verse states that He will direct our paths, or guide us, if, conditional statement, we acknowledge Him in ALL our ways. Not some of our ways, but all of them. God doesn’t only want us to lean on Him for the hard things or the big things. He wants us to lean on Him for everything. In everything we do, in every decision we make, we should always be looking to God for our answers and wisdom.

Leaning on our own understanding is like doing a trust fall with ourselves, you will fall. But God is trustworthy to direct your steps, to guide you in every aspect of your life. If you will only seek His face and acknowledge Him in all your decisions big and small. You will then have such peace about your decisions, knowing that you gave them over to God, who is much smarter than you by the way, and that He is in control of whatever your situation is. Just remember to lean on the one you can trust, God.
