Water

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go, and meet with God?” Psalm 42:1-2

Water. My glass is full of refreshing, pure water.  I can feel the cool liquid flow down my parched throat as I drink.  A memory I often reflect on pops into my mind.  Come walk with me to a place in Dan in northern Israel.

The path our tour group is following is beautiful.  To my right there is a wall of luscious plants climbing up and over my head creating a tunnel.   On the left side is the wildly interwoven plants bordering the rushing river. Carefully, I watch my footing as I walk on the slippery dinner-plate size, ancient stones and step over twisted roots.  In each breath, I drink the earthy smell of trees, plants, moss and mud.  My vision beholds a multitude of shades of green and dark rich colors of brown.  Best of all, I hear the roar of the rushing, boiling river to my left.  Its’ spray covers me.

Why is this experience so captivating to me?  It reminds me of Psalm 42:1,2 “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go, and meet with God?”

There are times in all of our lives we feel dry or empty.  It can come on seasons in our lives when we give and give and give to others—leaving us empty.  It can come during terrible heart-wrenching trials. It can come when we have put someone else, or things above God.

Just as we “pant” for water, God created us to “pant” for Him!  When we feel that painful ache for God, drink in His presence. Drink in His love for you.  Allow His cool refreshing presence to flow over you.  Hear His words of love speaking to your heart. Be strengthened. Be invigorated. He will fill you up with renewed health and energy.  Plant yourself in front of your Bible. Let is written Word soak into your weary heart.

Every time you drink a refreshing cool drink of water---remember your soul craves to drink in the presence of God.

FOR PARENTS:
  1. Teach your children to compare their thirst for water with their thirst for God.
  2. Teach your children that just because they feel far away from God at times, God is always with them. Train them to respond to God through Scriptures, Prayer, Service.
  3. Post on their mirror a card with Psalm 42:1,2
