Proverbs 2:6

For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Am I the only one who thought Smarties candy would actually make you smart? I remember being 6 years old thinking I'd only need to take a Smartie a day ("Rockets" for Pastor Jim) and I'll be smart in no time. While this of course was quite the preposterous notion, there is something that we can do daily to receive something better than just being smart. We can attain wisdom or super smarties as I refer to it with my youth, that only comes from God.

If I'm being honest, when I was young I thought that wisdom was something only people with grey hair had. But I definitely had the wrong idea of what wisdom means. James describes wisdom as pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere (cf. James 3:17). Wisdom is knowing what to say and when to say it. Wisdom is knowing the right actions to take. Wisdom is knowing what future decisions will lead to our good and God's glory. Wisdom provides us with ways to help those who need it.

Wisdom is crucial in the life of a Christian. James tells us if we want wisdom, we just need to ask. (cf. James 1:5) God will give it to you through your daily reading and studying of His word. God also places wise people in our lives who can help us make wise decisions and point us to Jesus. My prayer is that we'd all be in our word and on our knees seeking the face of the Lord yearning for his wisdom. Wisdom is a lot like the love God has for us; it's free to all who want it, and it never runs out. However, we still must make a choice to seek, embrace, and act upon it!
