Isaiah 40:8

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.

Forever is an interesting word. In fact, I'd say it's one of the most used, least understood words in our language. It's telling when we use phrases like, "best friend forever" or "I haven't seen you in forever". I know I've seen many a 22-year-olds shopping in "Forever 21". Even one of my son Winston's favorite phrases is, "It's taking for a long time" which in four-year-old translates to "it's taking FOREVER". The truth is the word is almost impossible to fully comprehend.

Take a survey of the things around you right now. Of the things near you, what is one thing that you see that will never fade away, break, or die? The oldest and largest trees we see will one day fall. The most expensive mansions in the world will one day be nothing but rubble. It's said that even some of the stars that we can see with a telescope have died years ago. So much of what we value in life will not last forever.

So why put our trust and adoration into things that are temporary? Why do we devote so much time and energy to things that are fading? By no means do I believe that having a career is pointless or that hobbies and extracurricular activities don't have their place. But if everything we do isn't for the glory of the One who will be there after it's gone, then it's pointless. Jesus said heaven and earth will pass away, but His words would never pass away (Matt. 24:35). It is important that we remember that someone else's "forever" can be affected by your today. Only God and His word will stand the test of time, so how will we choose to act on it?
