Deuteronomy 26: 17-19

Today you have proclaimed the LORD to be your God, and that you will walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments, and His judgments, and that you will obey His voice. Also today the LORD has proclaimed you to be His special people, just as He promised you, that you should keep all His commandments, and that He will set you high above all nations which He has made, in praise, in name, and in honor, and that you may be a holy people to the LORD your God, just as He has spoken.

Several years ago someone close to me asked, "If I'm going to believe part of the Bible, I have to believe all of it, right?" It's such human nature to want to pick and choose what we believe in God's Word, as long as it goes along with what we want to do at the time. As I read through this passage this week I paused a moment to really think about it. Proclaiming the LORD to be my God doesn't just mean I believe there is a God, it means that I am choosing to walk in ALL His ways, keep All His statutes and commandments, accept all His judgments and OBEY His voice.

But I am a sinner and I'm going to sin, so how do I obey ALL the time! Romans 7 speaks to this, describing the battle between our spiritual desire to please God and our fleshly desire to sin. It culminates in, "O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God-through Jesus Christ our Lord!" How wonderful that we have the Word of God that we can run to every day, each hour, each minute (some days are like that). He will empower us when we are tempted to stray from obeying His voice and we will find His peace and forgiveness when we haven't. That's the promise and the reward of proclaiming the LORD to be our God.

Wonderful grace of Jesus
Greater than all our sin
How shall my tongue describe it
Where shall it's praise begin
Taking away my burden
Setting my spirit free
For the wonderful grace of Jesus
Reaches me
Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus
Deeper than the mighty rolling sea
Higher than the mountain sparkling like a fountain
All-sufficient grace for even me
Broader than the scope of my transgressions
Greater far than all my sin and shame
O magnify the precious name of Jesus
Praise His name!
