Daily Devotional

I’m sitting, watching the Pacific Ocean churn and swirl and crash. The air smells wonderfully of the sea! The sound is both soothing and rhythmic. This smell and sound reminds me of my childhood home located three blocks from the Ocean. I feel like a homing pigeon coming home to roost.

Genesis 1:20-23 comes to my mind. “And God said, ‘Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of heavens.’ So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.’ And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.”

A long-legged bird scurries across the beach sticking his slender curved beak in the sand for food. I see the bobbing heads of seals collected around a rock off shore. Birds fly low in pattern. How creative God is! The Ocean is full of creatures—from microscopic creatures to mighty whales, from brightly colored creatures to transparent. I love picking up shells and stones that have tumbled up the shoreline. Each treasure is different.  

I understand the similarities all people share… every person has a soul, created in the image of God. My mind is drawn to my creative God. Every person is different—eye color, hair color, skin color, body shape, talents, speech. Even if a person is a twin…they are different! Beautifully made by God. Help me Lord to accept how you made me. Why, do I complain about how the God of the Universe made me? Forgive me Lord!  

I want to celebrate God’s creativity! Praise God!!

The Ocean grabs my attention again. Oh, how I love God’s creation! You are our creative God!

FOR PARENTS:
1. Take your children for a walk of discovery. Challenge them to name all the colors they see. Count all the different birds they see. Hunt for three different bugs in the grass. Talk to them about our Creative God.
2. Talk about how special each child is, how God made us different. God decided what color their eyes should be, etc. Talk about how all people are specially made by God.
