Psalm 145:3

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.

We serve a great God. He is great in might, in power, in love, in wisdom; in every way we can imagine. Not only is God great, but His greatness is unsearchable. Unsearchable literally means “not capable of being searched or explored.” That means that God is so great that we can’t ever fully explore how great He is. Something like that is hard for us to wrap our heads around. How do we understand that something is un-understandable?

I just got back from a couple of days on the coast camping with my family. To me, the ocean is a wonderful reminder of God’s greatness. I look out at the seemingly endless water and can’t fathom how big the ocean is. How many gallons are in the ocean? How deep is the water? How many miles across to the next bit of shoreline? All I can think of when I look at the ocean is how huge and powerful it is. The ocean is great, but it was created by an even greater God.

I grew up in a small town of a few thousand people. There were no streetlights in my town and when night came and it got dark, it got really dark. I spent several nights looking up at the stars being amazed by their seemingly endless number. The more my eyes would adjust to the darkness, the more stars would seem to appear. Even those stars I could see were just a fraction of the actual number of stars in the sky. How many stars are there? How far away are they all? What’s the biggest star? The brightest? The smallest? The hottest? The night sky is great, but it was created by an even greater God.

In some ways it’s the mystery, the unsearchableness that makes things like the ocean or the night sky so great. There are several things that are great and seemingly unsearchable, but they all pale in comparison to the greatness of God. If the grandeur of the ocean, or the vastness of the stars can cause any amount of awe, then how much more awe should be caused by the God who created them? What other logical reaction could there be than to praise that great God?! Because God is great, because His greatness is unsearchable, He is greatly to be praised.
