James 5:13

“Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.”

I have a book called, “Today in History.” The book takes each day and gives a list of things that happened on that day throughout the years. For example, on this very day in 1821 Samuel Rust of New York City patented the first practical printing press in America. While that bit of trivia may not be useful in-and-of-itself, what I do find immensely useful in a book like this is to see how every single day has both good and bad things that happen. We really don’t know what today will hold.

We will all face times of suffering and times when we are cheerful but notice what James calls us to do in both situations; turn to God. In every occasion, in any circumstance, we can “with confidence draw near to the throne of grace” (Heb. 4:16). How are you feeling right now? Maybe your day is just starting, or maybe it’s coming to an end. When it comes to your heavenly Father, you don’t need to hide how you’re feeling. Are you suffering? Tell Him. Are you cheerful? Let Him know. Yes, He is already fully aware, but there is value in the conversation. However today may be marked for future generations, let it be marked in your own life as day you drew near to God.
