Advent Devotionals: Day 27

Psalm 2

Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain ? The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, "Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles." The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, "I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain." I will proclaim the Lord's decree: He said to me, "You are my son; today I have become your father. Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery." Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

The joy of this day is that God the Father has done more than send his Son (v.7). He has also installed His King (v. 6). This One who came to earth in a humble manger as the Prince of Peace is now seated at the right hand of God as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. From the cradle to the cross to the crown. This is the Christmas story.

However, as the Psalm reveals, there are many who are ignoring that great revelation of the lordship of Jesus Christ. In their pride, they have elevated themselves or looked to others to rule over them. They have chosen to celebrate the temporal and ignore the eternal. But He who is coming again will not be ignored. There will come a time when every human that ever lived will come to recognize that this One who was born in a manger is eternally on His throne. Only those who take refuge in the crucified, risen, and exalted Lord alone will be blessed with a heavenly inheritance.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the Son of God, the Crucified Savior, the Risen Lord, and the King of Kings. On this day when I celebrate Your birth, I also celebrate Your coronation. I praise You for Your sacrifice on my behalf. I acknowledge that You are the greatest gift ever given to mankind. I love You, Lord.
Prayer Prompt:
·      Pray for those who don’t yet know Jesus as their Savior. Pray for any of your friends or family members who are still lost. Pray for your neighbors. Pray for our leaders both near and far. Pray that this day will be a day that more turn to the real reason for this season; Jesus Christ!
