Advent Devotionals: Day 8

Isaiah 4:2-6
In that day the Branch of the Lord will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of the survivors in Israel. Those who are left in Zion, who remain in Jerusalem, will be called holy, all who are recorded among the living in Jerusalem. The Lord will wash away the filth of the women of Zion; he will cleanse the bloodstains from Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire. Then the Lord will create over all of Mount Zion and over those who assemble there a cloud of smoke by day and a glow of flaming fire by night; over everything the glory will be a canopy. It will be a shelter and shade from the heat of the day, and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and rain.
How important is your family tree to you? For the Jew, family history and tribal position was everything. Therefore, it is not surprising that Isaiah uses ancestral language to describe the person and work of the Messiah. For the Christian today, the lineage of the Messiah is of monumental importance because it speaks to both His divine and human nature. Jesus, as the Son of God, could forgive sins and be a perfect sacrifice. Jesus, as the son of David, could be our human substitute, paying the penalty for mankind’s sin.
As you reflect on these verses, ask yourself these questions: Is this Branch beautiful and glorious to me? Do I cling to this Branch daily for spiritual nourishment and personal identity?
Prayer: Holy Father, we acknowledge that Your plan cannot be thwarted. We also acknowledge that we don't always understand Your plan or Your timing. Help me to wait on You and submit to Your eternal and good will. Thank You for Your righteous Branch, who secured salvation for us. Come quickly. Lord Jesus. In His name. Amen.
